Rachel sits on the edge of a tower. Her hood is pulled back and her purple hair waving in the breeze. She watches as a shooting star gets larger and larger in the night sky. Within a minute, the shooting star has become a young lady with flaming red hair. She hovers before Rachel and smiles.

“Raven! I have been searching for you,” the lady of the flaming hair exclaims.

“Hello, Kory,” she responds, melancholy in her voice. Rachel’s attention returns to looking at the stars.

“May I join you,” she asks, concern in her voice.

“Yes, of course,” Rachel replies, absently.

“What is bothering you, friend,” asks Kory, swooping down and taking a seat.

“Hmm? Oh, nothing in particular.” Rachel sighs for a beat, taking a quick look at Kory, before continuing. “It’s just… when I was training in Azarath… there was nothing to look up for.”

“Were there not stars in the sky,” Kory asks, a tad bit surprised.

“Maybe somewhere, I suppose. But we had to focus on training our minds. No distractions. Yet… I searched for stars in the night sky that I couldn't see.” She turns to Kory and looks into her glowing green eyes. “I wonder where you were in those moments.”

“I was on Tamaran. Looking at the stars. Wondering when I would find someone like you…”

“Are you going to drink that?”

She looked at him in disgust, her lips quivering as the mug of coffee before him visibly bubbled, the scent of sweetener and something faintly citrusy arising from the crumpled black can next to it.

The boy to whom both mug and empty can belonged looked at her with confusion.

“Yeah,” he answered, as if it was the simplest thing in the world.

This, Kara Danvers, was why she had not wanted to attend a co-ed, this was why she had not wanted to come all the way to Gotham. She had said this several times to Ma Kent whilst she had been staying at the big farmhouse after high school was out, and every time her reply had been the same; ‘Now, now, I’m sure Clark knows best. He is your cousin after all.’

The trouble was that Clark was a dunderhead. Everyone said he knew best, but one time she had had to build an actual robot just to get him off her case.

She watched the boy across from her lift the mug up close to his face, closing his eyes, sniffing at it like he was a wine taster or something. Who the hell poured Monster into their coffee? Surely, she should be doing something about this, surely she was honour-bound by Kryptonian oath or something to prevent him from doing actual harm to himself.

Gotham was so, so far away from Smallville. In high school, she had been class president, she had been valedictorian, she had been prom queene. Here at college in Gotham, she was just another weirdo with no friends.

And yet still, she thought, she was not so low that she would be drinking Monster and coffee at 7am before class.

“Are you really going to drink that?” she asked him again.

He opened his eyes, staring deep into the poison swirling in his mug. When she told the story to Lucy later, she would embellish it, she would tell her that there was miasma rising from the cup.

“I’m going to die,” he said simply, lifting the mug to his lips.

Jason Todd, she remembered. That was the idiot’s name. Jason Todd.

She could have sworn he was smiling.

Any combo of Barbara, Helena, Cass, and Steph; I feel like the batgirls are always vaguely in the background of reverse robins AUs. Give me a reverse Batgirl AU where they can be the focus! (Including Helena as a Batgirl because a) I love her and b) to make things a little more crunchy so that Cass just doesn't end up the same when you flip them)

Helena Bertinelli & Oliver Queen, I feel like there's solid potential for interactions between the two of them when Ollie's in his Grell urban hunter, thinks of killing as an option era. Potentially they meet in the space before Helena shows up in/returns to Gotham

There's something a little funny about watching Grant lose control of his powers. He's never exploded in front of Tara the way she heard he exploded Atlanta, but even if he did she has her own powers——she can protect herself.

Those sparks and shit are a funny little lightshow. And his face contorts like he's a little kid being told "no." Tara should borrow a video camera off somebody and immortalize one of those moments on tape, to show to Grant later. He wouldn't laugh. In fact, he'd probably explode. He's sensitive like that.

Tara isn't. If someone had video taped her big freakout, she'd watch it and laugh. She wants to see how red her face can be, how frizzy her hair got from her pulling at it. She wants to see how she got that weird star-shaped bruise on her side that fascinated for weeks on end. Was it a falling rock that didn't obey her? Did she hit herself? Was it a lucky shot from one of those asshole Titans?

She has a picture of the bruise, at least. It's pretty cool. She showed it to Grant, who also thought it was cool. At least the Titans are a better team now than they were back then.

Talia’s always poised. There’s something about her – about the careful tilt of her jaw, and the slope of her shoulders. He’d say it’s like a peacock, but it isn’t, really. It’s too pretend for that.

“Do you have a next teacher planned for me?”

“This would be significantly easier if you stopped killing them, you understand.”

“Counterpoint: it’s even more instructive.” And she snorts on that syllable, despite herself. Maybe there should be something in his own chest that lightens at the noise, but there’s just quiet.

Stillness.

“There’s a woman out in the Sahara desert. We’ll go for survival training this time.” And he wonders for a moment if he did anything to piss her off. It’s not like she’d even tell.

It could be the teachers of course, but she’s not wasteful. If it actually mattered to her she’d just stop giving him teachers. Plus, she is like Bruce in that way. She admires justice, even if she can’t bring it herself.

Could be the killing itself, but he also doubted that. She was league. It wouldn’t be new to her.

Of course, it could also be the fact that it was him doing it. Jason Todd, fifteen and death, sixteen and angry, Robin ‘till his end and not a single second longer. He could guess that she’d had plans to give him back to Bruce, a son returned. He’d thoroughly screwed those plans – if he went back as he was, Bruce would want nothing to do with him.

He could still pretend, of course. She’d hide it if he asked her to. If he repented, and crawled back into Robin’s dead skin, went out as the ward of Bruce Wayne. It’d burn even single goddamn second, but he could do it. It might even be better, forgiveness and relief, if he could choke it all down. It’d be a good life, a good destiny, even.

Except look where destiny got him. Look where Bruce got him. Six feet below, in a box made of rotting hardwood, right next to the grave of his mother. Right next to the woman who’d murdered him.

So why choose closure, or comfort or sonhood, when he could have the Joker instead. Because: Jason had a question that demanded an answer, and either Bruce would break, or Jason would show him that there wasn’t a Robin left in him. Maybe he’d find something in there – closure or rage or certainty or something. But at the very least, he could pull that burning out of him, and shove it down his throat.

“I’ll get my things ready.” He says, aloud. She glances back at him, something hidden in her glance. Maybe she still thought he’d turn over a new leaf.

But there were no more leaves to turn. He knew the path he was on, certain as blood, or rage. Talia could look for the scraps of a dead kid in him for a while longer – he knew the path he was on. And no matter which was he turned out, at least he’d have the chance to shoot up flames.

“Alright.” He rolls up to his feet, and spins on his heels.

Maybe if he were more inclined to the supernatural, or the quiet, he’d hear it. Because: when the universe had shattered, it’d placed his feet back on the ground, gave him back his destiny. He’d defied it on accident, but there was a chance, if he wanted it. A chance, for what was supposed to be.

But what was supposed to be cannot help being ground under what is.
